there’s black and brown tiny particles coming out of water of the sink in my dorm……I use a pitcher that’s filters and I noticed some brown particles….i don’t know if it’s just the reflection….it’s minimal
I complaint to front desk about the particles an dthey said it’s not an emergency so they wouldn’t call out maintenance for it..from what I hear black particles is only carbon but how about the brown particles
brown particles doesn’t seem normal and sounds like it could be bacteria that’s quite harmful…..there’s quite a bit of black particles as well….
Luke it’s a college dorm not a house lol
exactly it could be feces or dirt that’s not safe and nasty…how is that not an emergency? I could get sick and that’s just gross
luke it’s a dorm we don’t have a stoves in our rooms…i’m not going to go to the lobby just to boil water every friggin day

it could be an emergency if there is bacteria in the water, you must go to a really crappy school to be treated like that, get the local health agency in to have a look, it clearly is not correct for water to be tainted in any way and don’t drink it, the brown particles could be rust OR feces, call the utility company the have a public duty to check complaints about water quality
This is not an Emergency…with all that being said, I would filter all my water (maybe even boil it) before using it to cook or drink. You are definetly getting some kind of trash in your line, this could be from anything – broken lines, really old lines, water stagnating somewhere, etc…its best to play is safe and get a good water filter, Pur or Britta with activated carbon are usually good.
hope this helps

Do you know if the water mains in your area were turned off for a repair? Most of the time when a water main is repaired, water will come out discolored (brownish) from the repair for a short period of time. Try letting the water run for about 2-3 minutes and see if it clears. If it doesn’t you need to pursue the front desk as you have done. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t see that as an emergency.
Brown is normally rust in the line. I would take it to the lab on campus tomorrow and have them test it.
Rust and could have bacteria in it as well. Continue using your water filter for drinking & cooking provided you’re allowed to cook in your dorm. I’ll bet they won’t do much about it most likely it’s been going on for years. Rusty pipes and possible bacteria in the hot water tank, welcome to the college dorm. If you’re still concerned and they do nothing take a sample to your local water company and have it analyzed. You’ll know for sure then.
It is not a problem when you filter out the particles.
The problem is that many water systems do not filter out all the junk. There is safe limits to allow certain amounts. It would be way to expensive to filter out everything that is not hydrogen and oxygen, the two chemical componets that make up water.
Certain bacteria is beneficial. Your body could not digest food with out it. Your body has many different bacteria that it uses in the digestive system.
As for the black particles, it is impossible to guess what it is. It may junk in the water pipes.
