Kenmore Water Filters
I have a two year old Kenmore UltraSoft 480 water softener. When it begins the regeneration cycle, it looks like all of my water is going out the backwash drain, and the cycle never seems to get going. I also have more water in my salt tank than usual (no salt bridge). I have cleaned all filters and checked the lines. Any thoughts?

You have a proplem in the venturi or the line that goes to it. Find the gray cap that looks like half a football. It is about golfball size and is located on top of the tank behind the control panel. Unscrew the top, careful to note each of the little parts as they are removed so you can put them back in the proper order. There should be a cap,a large o-ring,a screen filter metal cone shaped, than the venturi either red or black,IMPORTANT..note the position and the small black rubber piece(about 1/4" in diameter) that sits in the venturi, make sure you can see light through the hole in it. remove the blk hose attached to this assmby ,make sure it is clear. reasmble and fire it up. you should work fine .
I suspect the rubber seal under the rotor has rolled out of its seat. Put it in bypass before attempting to repair. (seal looks like a spider) with a ring around it. A new seal will be required. Once it is deformed, it cannot be reused. Put a thin layer of food grade silicon on the bottom of the rotor before reassembling. If this is more than you can handle. You have only one other option. Call Sears service.
